About My Green Family
My Green Family tells the story of us, Andrea and Odum, and our journey towards providing a greener, healthier lifestyle for ourselves and our two kids, Tristan and Maya.
The idea of My Green Family came about late in 2008 when we were discussing the state of our environment and the role we played in it. What we really found remarkable was how differently we viewed the environment after we had our first child. What is in the food they are eating or the water they are drinking? Or the plastic toys they put in their mouths and play with every day? Are these things even safe? And how do all these things affect how they will grow and develop into healthy adults?
At around the same time we were thinking about My Green Family we were also beginning to become concerned about our son Tristan’s development, or more specifically his regression. After months of speculation, second (and third and fourth) guessing, and reading through any book pertaining to developmental delay we could find, Tristan was diagnosed with autism in June of 2009.
To this day no one knows for certain what the cause of autism is, but could there be any link to all the chemicals in our environment that we are exposed to every single day? Going green will bring about a healthier lifestyle for all of us, but can it help treat or even cure autism?
This is where our story starts. On this blog we will be writing many stories about turning our lives upside down and going green, one step at a time. Most importantly everything we are doing is on a tight budget, so going green doesn’t mean breaking the bank. We’ll also share our stories with Tristan and strategies we are using to help him overcome his autism.
We hope that you enjoy reading our story, and perhaps learn a few green tips along the way that you can incorporate into your daily lifestyle.
Best wishes,
Andrea and Odum.
About Odum
I received my undergraduate degree from the University of Waterloo in Environmental Sciences with minors in biology and chemistry. After graduation I was employed for almost 3 years as a hydrogeological technician, primarily working on projects dealing with groundwater contamination.
Currently, I am a graduate student at the University of Waterloo completing the final year of my Master’s degree in biology. You can learn more about my project by viewing my academic website here.
About Andrea
I have also received an undergraduate degree from the University of Waterloo in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology. After graduation I had been accepted and was planning to attend teacher’s college, however, our first bundle of joy arrived delaying my attendance.
After both our children are in school I plan to re-apply to teachers college. But for now I would not trade staying at home raising my two angels for anything in this world!
