The I Am Autism Video by Autism Speaks Controversy

Autism Speaks ControversyOn twitter yesterday I feel like a hellstorm hit. So many of the autism related tweeters I follow where going bananas about the new Autism Speaks video called I Am Autism. This video shows shots of kids with autism standing alone and you hear a voiceover that anthropomorphises autism as a malicious enemy describing the havoc it wrecks. Then you see the same kids with their friends and families and people saying how we’re fighting autism and loving our children.

The Autism Diagnosis Part I: First Pediatrician Appointment

Autism DoctorAlmost three months ago we got the official diagnosis of autism. We had waited almost three months for the appointment with the developmental pediatrician and I can’t even tell you how nervous I was for it. We pretty much knew what he was going to say, but I still had hope that we would not get the diagnosis of autism.

So I got everyone dressed nice that morning. I made sure Odum and I where in our best “respectable good parent” clothes, which of course were also bike friendly. I dressed Maya in her cutest “eat me I’m so adorable” outfit. And Tristan in a cute little collared shirt that said “I’m such a sweet little man”. I mean if you have a good looking and well put together, perfect looking family how can you possibly give one of the most devastating diagnoses right?

The Methyl B12 Miracle

Methyl B-12 SyringeWe decided to go ahead and take the next step with Tristan’s biomedical therapy and started giving him vitamin methyl B12 shots, simply vitamin B12 in an injectable form. There are many different forms of B12, but it’s the methyl B12 that kids with autism have a need for.

Autism Spectrum Disorder Part I: The History Of Autism

History of AutismThere is a huge controversy raging about autism: about why it occurs and how to treat it. I didn’t truly understand this debate until I read Changing the Course of Autism by Dr. Bryan Jepson (most of the information I’m going to be talking about in this post is from that book). Of course I’d heard the whole vaccines causing autism debate but there is so much more to that discussion than I thought. I feel to fully understand the state of the autism controversy and how it relates to our family going green it’s necessary to understand the history and origins of the diagnosis and treatment of autism. So I’m going to start off by doing an overview of the history of autism.

12 Autism Warning Signs

One of my biggest hopes for this blog is to raise awareness for autism. I feel like we where blindsided when Tristan was diagnosed.

A lot of the behaviors we now know to be typical of autism we thought were just part of who Tristan is, and to a certain degree they are, but they are also because of autism. There are definite warning signs but you won’t read about any of them in your “baby’s first year” books. And unfortunately for us our family doctor was less than helpful to say the least.
